Media Center Philosophy
The mission of the Bonner Springs Elementary library is to empower staff, students, and community members to be life-long learners, informed decision-makers, proficient users of technology, and enthusiastic readers.
Goals and Objectives
Love of Literature – To help all children discover a love of books and empower intellectual curiosity.
Technology Instruction – To provide assistance through instructing students the skills necessary to retrieve information and selecting appropriate resources to assist them.
Organizing Materials – To select, acquire, organize, and make instructional materials accessible to support the educational needs of the school.
Collaboration – To encourage collaboration between Library Media Specialist and faculty to integrate information, media literacy, and technology skills into all curricular areas.
Active Participation – To create a learning environment where students are active participants as individuals and as members of collaborating groups.

Goals and Objectives
Love of Literature – To help all children discover a love of books and empower intellectual curiosity.
- To teach methods to help kids discover books of interest, learning styles, and use reading incentive programs
- To create a warm atmosphere that nurtures exploration with murals, characters, reading nooks, and literature displays of diversity and celebrations
Technology Instruction – To provide assistance through instructing students the skills necessary to retrieve information and selecting appropriate resources to assist them.
- To teach literacy skills such as research strategies, copyright, bibliographies, formatting, and internet etiquette
- To assist in research skills development with kid-friendly resources (such as NetTrekker and Kids Galileo)
Organizing Materials – To select, acquire, organize, and make instructional materials accessible to support the educational needs of the school.
- To use selection tools along with suggestions from peers, teachers, students and administration when purchasing new material
- To support our school with current, age appropriate, or high-need materials (including new book fair items, informational nonfiction text on lower lexile levels, biography materials, and other areas designated by standardized scores)
- To organize materials by genre, label clearly with color coded genre levels, and display books that show diversity and social cultural differences
Collaboration – To encourage collaboration between Library Media Specialist and faculty to integrate information, media literacy, and technology skills into all curricular areas.
- To encourage collaboration to extend and compliment the curriculum presented in classrooms
- To partner with the Bonner Springs Public Library and build a sense of community connection
- To encourage teachers to share what they’re reading with students by creating a rotational “Teacher’s Favorites” display
Active Participation – To create a learning environment where students are active participants as individuals and as members of collaborating groups.
- To encourage participation in book clubs, literature circles, student book blogs, and other library reading programs
- To provide independent work, presentation practice, and cooperative group learning experiences in class
